Ranji Trophy: Rahul Dalal of Arunachal Pradesh is ready to emerge as the top scorer in the current tournament, but could not beat the record of 1415 Laxman VVS races in a single season.

The V15 Laxman record of 1415 races in a single season of the Ranji Trophy remains intact after Rahul Dalal came out at a low price in Dibrugarh (Reuters)

HIGHLIGHT

  • VVS Laxman had scored 1415 races in the 1999/00 season of the Ranji Trophy
  • Rahul Dalal scored 1340 runs in the current Ranji Trophy
  • Sarfaraz Khan finished with 928 runs of only 6 games in the Ranji Trophy

Arunachal Pradesh hitter Rahul Dalal on Friday lost the all-time record for the VVS Laxman Ranji Trophy, but is still ready to retire with the honor of being the top scorer in the 2019-20 season. While Rahul fell 13 in the second inning of Arunachal against Meghalaya in Dibrugarh, Laxman's account in the 1999-00 season of 1415 runs remains the most runs scored in a single season of the Ranji Trophy.

Rahul's account of 1340 races is now the second highest in the history of the tournament, beating the hero of the last season of Meghalaya, Milind Kumar (1331). However, Rahul will have no more chance of increasing his account because Arunachal Pradesh has not been able to win a single game this season and, therefore, is already out of the quarter-final race.

If Rahul finishes the current season as the best scorer, he will mark the second feat in 2 years by a player from a northeast team, as the Lodha reforms added a team from each of the 7 regional states in the Ranji Trophy .

Here are the 5 best runners in a single season of the Ranji Trophy:

Season Player Careers
1999/00 VVS Laxman 1415
2019/20 Rahul Dalal 1340
2018/19 Milind Kumar 1331
2015/16 Shreyas Iyer 1321
2016/17 PK Panchal 1310

Notably, the 1999-00 season proved to be a breakthrough for Laxman, as he soon played the tickets of his life with an incredible 281 at Eden Gardens vs. Australia, an entry that changed the face of Indian cricket in the coming times.

Another player who would expect his exploits this season to turn out to be as changing as the 1999/00 for Laxman, is Sarfaraz Khan. Although he left Friday for only 6 races in the last game of the Maharashtra season, Sarfaraz has finished the 2019/20 Ranji Trophy with a total of 928 races of only 6 games!

3 hundred including a triple and double and a batting average of 154.67 while hitting at a speed above 75 should definitely put Sarfaraz in the fight for a place in India soon.
