Although great advances have been made in the world of publishing, the literary community in general still does not fully appreciate color writers.

According to a 2019 study, 76% of people working in publications identify themselves as white. While the number of diverse books published is increasing, Only 7% of children's books in 2017 They were written by black, Latin and Native American authors combined.

Jo Chiaramonte, who works for the social storytelling platform, Wattpad, helped Insider select young and black writers for a list of authors who are changing the industry. "Each of these authors is working to increase diversity and representation in the literature, presenting characters with whom young and black readers can identify themselves and developing page change patterns," he said.
